Built to Last: Wig Care & Longevity

A well-made human hair wig lasts years, not months. The difference is decided twice: once when the hair is selected, and every week after by how the piece is cared for. This guide explains both — and what to do if a piece ever needs work.

Why construction decides lifespan

Most wigs on the market are built from acid-processed hair coated in silicone. They feel soft on day one; the coating washes out within months, and the stripped hair mats, tangles, and dulls. A Beka piece starts from cuticle-aligned European and Russian human hair — never stripped, never coated — hand-tied into the cap and hand-finished in our Brooklyn studio. Intact cuticle is what allows a wig to be washed, colored, and heat-styled for years, the same way growing hair is.

What is normal — and what is not

Normal: light shedding of a few strands during brushing, especially in the first weeks — hand-tied knots settle with wear. Slight dryness at the ends over time, resolved with conditioning.

Not normal: matting at the nape after gentle care, clumps of shedding, or thinning patches. On a genuine, cared-for piece these are rare — and they are exactly what we want to see in person. If it happens, contact the studio. We would rather examine a piece and make it right than have you live with it.

Care that protects the investment

  • Wash every 8–12 wears with sulfate-free shampoo, in one direction, in lukewarm water. Never scrub the knots.
  • Condition mid-lengths to ends only — conditioner on the cap loosens hand-tied knots.
  • Dry on a stand, air-first. Heat-style only on dry hair, with protectant, below 350°F.
  • Store on a stand or in the original box, brushed out, away from direct sun.
  • Color only through the studio or a stylist experienced with wig hair — deposits are safe, lifting should be left to us.

Studio services: refresh and repair

Pieces come back to the studio for washing and styling, hairline work, knot repair, and color refreshing. A serviced piece routinely runs years past its first fitting. Book through the studio at (718) 530-2419 or by appointment via The Private Collection.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a human hair wig last?

A machine-made, processed-hair wig typically lasts 4–12 months. A hand-tied wig in unprocessed, cuticle-aligned hair lasts 3–5+ years with reasonable care, and longer with periodic studio servicing.

Why is my wig shedding?

A few strands during brushing is normal, especially early on. Heavy shedding usually traces to conditioner on the knots, brushing while wet, or processed hair breaking. If a Beka piece sheds beyond the normal range, bring it in — we will examine the cap and repair what needs repairing.

Can I wash and heat-style my wig?

Yes. Unprocessed human hair handles washing, blow-drying, and hot tools the way growing hair does. Use sulfate-free products, keep conditioner off the cap, and stay below 350°F with a protectant.

Does Beka Wigs repair wigs?

Yes — washing and styling, hairline and knot repair, and color refresh services are done at the Brooklyn studio, for Beka pieces first and other high-end pieces case by case.

Which wigs last the longest?

Hand-tied wigs in cuticle-aligned European and Russian hair. Read why in our Russian hair guide and our overview of what makes a wig look real.
